Interested parties may pick up an application at the Village office, the Chamber of Commerce of Sequatchie County, the Citizens Tri-County Bank Mortgage Center, or Happy Bottoms Office Supplies. We can relate to that at the Village!! We are working in between raindrops, and have made some progress on the next 2 units of Phase 2. The foundations are in at lots 19 & 20, and walls and trusses are almost done. Once the roof is in place, we should be able to work around the rain and mud.

Foundations for the next 2 units will also be poured soon. Our plan, weather permitting, is to have lots 19 and 20 completed and occupied in mid-November, and have a good start on the next 2 which will be completed late 2009/early 2010. We will then have 6 homes in place for Phase 2, and a total of 22 families in the village. What a difference in the lives of these families from a few months ago. Most were living in either overcrowded or unacceptable conditions, and now have a new comfortable energy efficient house. One of our residents recently stated - "God is good", and we have to agree with that. We at New Hope are so grateful to be a part of this project and also for the friends we have made in the Village. They are moving past just having a house, and are making the Village a community.

Work will continue on this phase of the project for several more months. We are in need of volunteers to assist with construction or meals. If you have questions about the project, please contact Helen Ickes at 423-991-2616. And, as always, thanks to those of you have given time and made donations to the project.

Village update Phase 2

House number 2, Phase 2 of the Village closed the last of September, so we now have another homeowner in place! All houses on Cardinal Lane are now completed. The vast amount of rain we have experienced this summer, and continue to experience, has delayed adding backfill and final landscaping to the finished houses. Hopefully, we can work on sunny days to finally have everything in place for these wonderful homeowners.

We have the beginnings of a foundation on the next street, Hummingbird Lane. (again, rain delays) We expect to begin construction very soon, to enable 2 more homeowners to move in this year. The first 2 houses for this phase were single units, and the next ones will be townhomes. We look at each house plan and try to vary roof lines, siding, roof, and shutter colors, so there will be an interesting variety but each will still fit in.

Please drive by and check out our subdivision when you have a chance. With the streets, sidewalks, and driveways in place, it looks beautiful against the scenery of Dunlap. Tennessee is just a great place to live! Our hills, mountains, streams, and greenery are hard to beat.

Thanks again for all the support for this project. We want to give a special thanks to Tom Long, at Cumberland Appraisal Services, for his assistance. Plans are to close on this house this coming Thursday, September 17th and another homeowner will be able to call the Village home. This will be our first single house, at the end of Cardinal. There will be a few others scattered throughout the village.

The next house, also a single, is scheduled to close in the next couple of weeks. That will bring the total number of houses in the village to 18, and growing! Two more foundations are to be poured soon for 2 townhomes, and these will be the first ones on Hummingbird Lane.

Because of medical issues, the applicants are not always able to provide the "sweat equity" to help with house builds. We call on relatives if possible to paint, provide meals, or do whatever they can to help us out. This helps us keep the cost of the houses down, and provides a way for the new homeowners to give back to the program. However, sometimes the applicants have no relatives close by who can help us out. We are calling on friends from the community to fill in the gap and assist us in our efforts. If you have an organization, church group, or know of any individuals who can work with us, please let us know. Helen Ickes is the local contact and she can be reached at 423 991-2616, or call the NHC office at 1 866-396-4673, ext. 22 or 27. We would also appreciate donations of landscaping items.

Thanks to the community of Dunlap and to the Secuatchie County Sheriff's office and the Trustee program for what you have already done! With the streets, sidewalks, and driveways now in place in Phase 1, the Village is really looking good. Work is in progress for electrical and plumbing.
The foundation is in place for lot 14.

Both of these houses will have a zero-step entry through the garage and the front door. NHC is a member of the Easy Living program, which is administered through the Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities. In order to qualify, a house must have at least 1 entry with no steps (zero-step), have at least 30" doors for possible wheelchair entry, and be adaptable to any ADA requirements the homeowner may have now or in the future. We have certified 2 houses so far with this program, and expect to continue to build with zero-step entries whenever possible. Many of our homeowners have health restrictions, and NHC strives to make the houses fit with their needs. All of the houses are ADA compatible, so the senior adult can continue to live in the house if future modifications are necessary.

If you know of anyone in the Sequatchie County area who might benefit from our program, applications are available at the Citizens Tri-County Bank, Happy Bottom Office Supplies, and the Chamber of Commerce. Or, call 1 866-396-4673, ext. 22 or 27 and an application can be mailed.

NHC would like to thank the Sequatchie County Sheriff's office, Chaplain Lenard Sutherland, and the trustees who are in their work program. They have provided many hours of volunteer work to this project. Some of the trustees who are in the program have been able to learn new skills to help them when they are released. We appreciate their efforts on our project, and are also very glad that we can make a contribution to the community that goes beyond our project.

Progress on Phase 2 of SAH Village of Dunlap

There has been a lot of progress made since delivery of the first house package for Phase 2 of the SAH Village of Dunlap last Friday. It has been a very busy month for us as we finish up these two townhomes and continue to work on the two next door, at lots 9 and 10.

We hope to have a dedication in the next few weeks to give everyone an opportunity to come out and see what has been accomplished, recognize the work crew and volunteers, and meet the homeowners. We will keep you posted and let everyone know as soon as a date is set for the dedication.

We are continuing to accept applications into the Village. If you know of anyone who is interested, please stop by the construction office, or the main office of Citizens Tri-County Bank and pick up the form. The drywall has been completed and the trim package will arrive on Friday of this week. The families are looking forward to painting, but may have to wait until it warms up a bit! Temperatures are supposed to drop this week, but we expect painting to begin within the next week.

The walls and roof trusses are in place on lots 9 & 10. Work will continue on the roof this week, and should it should be in place by the end of the week to get ready for shingles.

We also have the foundation poured for lots 15 & 16, so we can expect a delivery for those 2 units very soon.

In the next few weeks, we will have 6 more units completed, which will put us more than half-way through Phase I. These future homeowners are getting very excited about moving into their new houses.

We can use help with painting, volunteer transportation, meals, and construction. The roof, insulation, and siding are completed. We also passed the electrical inspection. The second delivery will be scheduled soon and we hope to begin painting next week. Our goal is to close on these 2 units and have our new homeowners moved in by the end of January.

The first delivery for lots 9 & 10 was made yesterday. Everything was unloaded and as soon as the weather cooperates, we will begin these 2 units. The foundation is already in place, so we will be able to erect the walls, roof trusses, and move forward quickly with these units. For today, however, it is rain rain rain!

Our village is looking great, with 4 new homeowners living here and 4 more moving in the near future. We are so grateful for the support from everyone on this project. Our homeowners are living in warm, energy efficient homes in a safe neighborhood.

It's not too early to think about spring break and vacations. What better way to spend it than helping those less fortunate? We have a need for volunteers in Dunlap. We are located in Sequatchie County, Tennessee, about 30 minutes from Chattanooga, and very close to Fall Creek Falls, where out of town volunteers sometimes like to stay.

Our current needs are for volunteers to help with construction, painting, cleanup, meal preparation, or any in-kind or monetary donations that would help us with this project. Now, in just a few days, our first four homeowners will move into their new houses in the Seniors at Home Village at Dunlap, Tennessee.

We are presently waiting for connection of the septic pump and final registratrion of the plat. The first townhome is very close to being finished. Today, we are moving in topsoil to prepare for the seeding and straw for lots 1 & 2. The Master Gardners will be working to get as much landscaping in as possible once the topsoil is in place.

At lots 17 and 18, we are busy installing plumbing and electrical, and have been able to work on paint at lot 17. We will take care of the topsoil, seeding, and straw once these major items are finished.

Homeowners have been busy helping with paint and cleanup so they will be able to move in when we receive final approval. We are all very excited about the soon to be completed houses, and are already looking forward to another house package delivery for lots 7 & 8.

New Hope Construction and the homeowners appreciate the support we have received from the community, especially the Master Gardners of Dunlap, the Dunlap Seventh Day Adventist Church, and the Sequatchie County Sheriff's Office. We also appreciate Helen Ickes, our on-site coordinator, for all the assistance she provides daily.

If you would like to volunteer for this project, we have eleven more units to complete in Phase I, and have plans to begin Phase II in the near future. The inside trimout, including cabinets and flooring, is to be delivered on Friday. We have generous volunteers from the Dunlap Seventh Day Adventist Church who will begin painting lot 1 on Sunday. The outside of these 2 units is looking good. Most of the backfilling has taken place, and we are waiting now for the topsoil so we can begin planning when the sidewalk and landscaping will be completed.

Insulation work on lots 17 & 18 is also scheduled for this week, with drywall to follow on Thursday.

Sewer pump wiring and approval is to be scheduled in the next few days. The final plat reading by the city is scheduled for 10/27. Once that is approved and filed, we can close on the first 4 units!!

A special thanks to the Dunlap Master Gardners and Sophia Gabalski. They have offered to assist with the landscaping. Since fall is a great time to plant, we expect to see grass, bushes, and a few trees very soon.

Our plans for the next 2 units are taking place, on lots 7 & 8. Footings will be poured in the next week (if it stays dry!) and the house package will be delivered soon after that.

Our homeowners are getting very excited. We appreciate your visits to the site to check out the work and provide some moral support. In the near future, you won't have to drive to visit, but can just step outside & walk to our office. We are looking forward to the completion of Phase I with 15 homeowners in place. The blocks will be delivered late Thursday afternoon, so things will progress and by the end of the week, we should be ready for shell package deliveries!

Once a delivery date for the house package is confirmed, a notice will be placed on our blog. We will be asking for help from our volunteers. Our plan is to unload the house and begin the build on the same day. Check back daily for updates on the delivery date.

Our groundbreaking for the Village will be this Thursday, July 24, at 1 PM. Several of our sponsors, partners, volunteers, and future homeowners will be there.

If you are interested in volunteering to work on the first build, please contact Helen Ickes at 615 495-3107. For information on making monetary or in-kind donations, information is available on our website. This is an affordable housing program for senior adults (55+) who are very low income and living in substandard conditions. We provide a volunteer built house which they purchase with a 30 year no interest mortgage. So far we have built ten homes in Dunlap Tennessee, Pikeville Tennessee, and Franklin Kentucky.

This year, plans are in place to move forward and construct up to eighteen homes in the Seniors at Home Village in Dunlap Tennessee. The property was purchased last fall just as it was being annexed by the city. We have gone through zoning, acceptance of the proposal to build one level townhomes, along with final acceptance for sewer and water. Roads were cut in a few months ago, streets have been named, and we are ready to pour foundations!

This property is nestled in the shadow of the Appalachain mountains of East Tennessee and has a breathtaking view. The homeowners will have a walking trail that circles the property. There will also be a common area for picnics, extra parking, etc. Each townhome in Phase I will have a 1 car garage. The townhomes are energy efficient and New Hope is incorporating green building practices whenever possible.

There have been many generous volunteers in the Dunlap and Pikeville area who have give of their time to ensure this project continues. We will keep all of you posted on the progress and our needs. Anyone who wishes to volunteer may call Helen Ickes at 615 495-3107, or the New Hope office at 1 866 396-4673. We appreciate any donation of time, money, or materials!
